Summary:
Paraneoplastic syndrome consists one of the major lung cancer’s manifestation
because it affects the course of the disease, patient’s life quality and
determines life’s expectancy.
The purpose of this study is to find out the frequency of paraneoplastic
syndrome’s manifestations in each body system and histological type; the
results can be the basis for the design of a new therapeutic intervention to
the patients who suffer from lung cancer.
Detailed data concerning patients who suffer from lung cancer and manifest
different aspects of Paraneoplastic syndroms were acquired through several
Public Health Databases which can be found on the internet; medical history
records of patients who were hospitalized at “SOTIRIA” General Hospital during
past years were also a useful source of knowledge in order to verify our
results. Inclusion criteria were: adult patients of both sexes, regardless
social status which are hospitalized or were hospitalized at “SOTIRIA” General
Hospital suffering from lung cancer. Patients aged <18 years or patients with a
second paraneoplastic disease were excluded from the study.
A total number of 300 medical history records were evaluated; 33 of them were
manifested a form of paraneoplastic syndrome. Clubbed fingering were the most
frequent clinical manifestation of the adenocarcinoma. A percentage of 10% of
all cancer patients developed a paraneoplastic syndrome at some time during the
course of their disease. In this case, patient’s survival depends on
chemotherapy and radiotherapy against primary tumor volume.
All references concerning paraneoplastic syndrom’s manifestations are
consistent with the results from the evaluation of patients’ medical records.
Lung cancer is a disease that affects more and more younger people and
paraneoplastc sysndrom’s manifestations are important because differential
diagnosis is difficult. Primary tumor volume is the target of each therapy
whereas deeper understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of tumor
manifestation can shed light on this complicated syndrome.
