Oral health status and treatment needs of 5 years old Greek children.
Summary:
Aim: to register the oral health status and treatment needs of 5 years old
Greek children via participation in Pan- Hellenic Pathfinder survey, under
standardized criteria with calibrated examiners. Furthermore, to investigate
the correlation of the above findings with socio-demographic parameters and
behavioral factors.
Material and Methods: A stratified cluster sample of 1222 healthy Greek 5 years
old children was randomly selected. The study design included
socio-demographic, clinical examination with a dental mirror and periodontal
probe in the classroom to record dental caries (d3-6mft - ICDAS II criteria),
oral hygiene and periodontal status ( DI-s, CI-s and CPI index), occlusion in
primary dentition, dental trauma and parental completion of a structured
questionnaire about dietary and non-nutritive oral habits, knowledge,
attitudes and behaviour related to oral health.
Results: Statistical analysis of the findings showed that dental caries varied
considerably between the different geographical districts, with mean
d3-6mft=1.46, while for incipient caries mean ICDAS1+2 =1.75. 42,5% of the
sample were caries free. Boys had higher d3-6mft than girls. The majority of
children had fair oral hygiene levels (DI-s=0.57) and healthy periodontium
(56,6%). Calculus was found in 28,6% of the sample. The most common molar
relationship was found to be “same terminal plane” in 45%. Dental trauma
prevalence was 9,6%. Statistically significant correlation was found between
increased overjet (>2mm) and dental trauma.
Conclusions: Results indicated an unequal distribution of dental caries
regarding the different geographical sampling areas. A significant percentage
of children presented with unmet treatment needs. Also the oral hygiene status
indicates that the knowledge and attitude to oral health is inadequate.
