Summary:
The interaction between periodontitis and immune response is well established.
Interleukin-1 is a cytokine whose role is pivotal in the regulation of the host
defense, leading in a great number of scientific papers during the past years
researching the relation of SNPs in IL-1 gene with periodontitis.
Aim : The correlation of IL-1 SNPs IL-1a [+4845] / IL-1a [-889], IL-1b [+3954],
IL-1b [-511] with periodontitis in central Greek population.
Material-Methods : 3 experimental groups were formed, chronic periodontitis
group (CP), aggressive periodontitis group (AP) and periodontally healthy
control group (C). The CP and C groups were matched by age and sex. The patient
database of Dental School of Athens was searched according to the
inclusion/exclusion criteria and 22,8 and 18 individuals were found and agreed
to participate. After approval of the Ethics Committee and signed approval of
all participants buccal cells were taken with aid of a buccal swab and DNA was
isolated. PCR, enzyme digestion and agarose electroforeris were performed.
Statistical analysis was performed which comprised of x2 test and Odds Ratio
calculations.
Results : x2 (4 degrees of freedom) and OR did not come up with statistically
significant results for the 3 experimental groups.
Discussion : Further research is required to investigate the relation of the
above mentioned SNPs to periodontitis.
