Summary:
Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) are quite common among dentists
throughout their professional careers, while the first symptoms of
musculoskeletal pain and discomfort appear in dental students. The purpose of
this study is to describe the prevalence of MSDs among dental students and
address some risk factors. Fourth and fifth year dental students in Dental
School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens filled in the
Nordic Questionnaire for Musculoskeletal Disorders, answering questions about
working as dental assistants as well. Among 185 students, 165 (89,2%) reported
pain and discomfort during the previous year. The current study indicates that
the vast majority of dental students in the Dental School of the University of
Athens, Greece have experienced MSD pain and discomfort during their limited
clinical practice. Women report pain and discomfort in the neck area and
shoulder area more than men and are generally affected in more anatomical
regions. Fifth year students are affected in neck area more than fourth year
students. Finally, working as a dental assistant increases chance of being
affected by MSD pain and discomfort in some anatomical regions.
