Original Title:
Πρακτικές χρήσης και συστάσεις σχετικά με συμπληρωματικά μέτρα πρόληψης της τερηδόνας στο ιατρείο που προτείνουν οι οδοντίατροι
Languages:
Greek
Summary:
Aim : To document, via questionnaire, the views of Greek dentists that were
enrolled in the Peiraias Dental Association, on the additional preventive
caries measures used in-office or at-home; their knowledge regarding the means
they use and the guidelines that they follow.
Materials and methods: Data were collected from 296 practitioners who
participated in the study.
Results: In-office topical fluoride gel was the most frequently used method of
topical fluoride application. General practitioners recommend in-office
fluoride applications for children and adolescents once a year whereas
specialists recommend the same procedure twice a year. There is however a
non-negligible percent of dentists (6.8 %) who never use in-office fluoride
.Also, 45 % of all dentists who participated in the study stated that the
topical fluoride application is not necessary for any group of adults, because
there would be no benefit from such a procedure.
Conclusion : There are variations in dentists' practice patterns regarding
preventive dentistry and continuing education courses are needed as a means
of updating and correcting dentists' knowledge regarding preventive services
and the application of individualised caries prevention programs, not only for
children and adolescents but also for adults, especially those of medium and
high caries risk status.
