An Introduction tothe Critical Philosophy of Gilles Deleuze
Summary:
In this dissertation, I attempt to present the particularities of Gilles
Delleuze’sphilosophical vocabulary, and I do so following two axes. The first
axis refers to Deleuze’sown conception of philosophy asthe creation of concepts
in response to a network of given problems. Accordingtothisview,
philosophicalconceptsconstitute created entities, they are products of creation
because they express the singular stylistic elements of the thought of each
philosopher. Moreover, accordingtoDeleuze, thought is being generated in the
happening of an encounter with a sign whose problematic nature the philosopher
tries to interpret.
At this point, and in order to clarify Deleuze’sconstructivism as an element
ofhis notion of philosophy, I draw the second axis which unfolds the joined:
productive – systematic aspect of his thought, namelythe plane that consists
ofthe problems that he tries to solve and the concepts he creates in his
attempt to do so.
Specifically, I develop the two critical components of his philosophy: his
undertaking of Nietzsche’s demand for the reversal of Platonismand the
articulation of a new transcendental method that will provide an account of
genesisof real experiencein contrast to Kant’s transcendental idealism, which
only provides conditions of possible experience. Deleuzeintroduceshis
generative method, namelytranscendentalempiricism,inview of his
generalcriticalproject of introducing a new image of thought freed from the
implicit presuppositions of philosophical tradition.
Theinscriptionofanewimageis taken to be of absolute urgency, given that these
implicit presuppositions underlying the traditional metaphysical systems and
any type of philosophy of representation, restrict thought and reducethought’s
relation to the world tothe production of a finite series of possible
representations (cliches).
