The aim of this study is the comparative monitoring of cell aging and death
processes in erythrocytes during their storage in the additive solution of
CPD/SAGM, with (L) or without (NL) pre-storage filter leukoreduction. The
ultimate objective of the study is to assess the impact of white blood cells,
and thus the process of leukoreduction, in the survival and
structural/functional competence of erythrocytes destined for transfusion.
These objectives were approached with amalysis of the the proteome, morphology
and exposure of surface markers of cell death.In conclusion, the leukodepletion
of packed RBCs that have been collected in anticoagulant CPD solution, stored
in a nutrient/preservative solution SAGM and indented for transfusion, is
associated with the following effects:1.resistance of transfused RBCs to cell
clearance in the circulation (in vivo), 2.Delay of ex vivo aging rate of
erythrocytes, 3.Better homeostasis.
