Summary:
The present research work presents and discuss the contribution of Online
Social Networks (Social Media), to the management of natural disasters. Lately
more and more people are becoming users of social media so as a) to communicate
with their friends and peers or find other, b) to make public events of their
personal life, with the post of photos and videos. Additionally another
potential area of use is during the management of crises and disasters phases.
In case of natural disasters an indicative use of internet and especially
social networks is for people that have lost their relatives and friends so as
to communicate with each other or simply be informed that they are safe. For
this reason as the time passes, development of online social networks
presenting ways in order management in case of disaster to be sufficient.
Finally, the integration in public authorities such as Fire Brigade and Greek
Police, of social media in the framework of their extroversion policy is
considered as an effective and rapid management mechanism for natural disasters
and crises.
