Summary:
In the present work an initial sampling took place in the coastal area of
central Evoikos gulf, in order to evaluate the coastal point sources of
bacteriological pollutants and nutrients and to complement correspondent
earlier works of the Laboratory. Two consecutive samplings took place, which
were focused on the surrounding area of the Wastewater Treatment Plant of
Chalkis city (Passa Island), in order to study the dispersion of
microbiological parameters and nutrients in the marine environment around the
treated waste pipeline exit.
It was demonstrated that the most important point sources of microbial charge
and nutrients of central Evoikos gulf were Asopos and Lilas rivers, the
Wastewater Treatment Plant of Chalkis, stream estuaries, such as in the case of
Vlastos coastal site and beaches densely populated and with recreational
activities such as Oropos and Chalkoutsi Pigadakia Beach.
The study of microbiological load dispersion of the released treated waste in
the marine environment nearby the Chalkis Wastewater Treatment Plant
demonstrated high concentrations of microbiological parameters at a distance of
1250 m of the exit pipeline. The marine area which is expected to be directly
affected by the release of the treated wastewater is calculated to cover a
total surface of approximately 4.8 Km2 of the marine environment.
