Study of the vertical structure of warm and cold anticyclones generated in the Mediterranean basin.
Summary:
The present study investigates the spatial and temporal distribution of
synoptic and middle-scale hot and cold core moving anticyclones generated in
the Mediterranean basin in the period 1979-2012, as well as the vertical
structure at the time of anticyclogenesis with the help of mean and anomaly
fields of geopotential height, temperature and relative vorticity. From this
study, important conclusions are drawn about the behavior of the anticyclones
generated in the Mediterranean. It was observed that the majority of moving
anticyclones generated is cold-core, with maximum cold anticyclogenesis during
winter, spring and summer over Northern Africa. Cold-core anticyclones present
a baroclinic character and the thermal signal mostly decreases with height, in
contrast to warm-core anticyclogenesis.
