Summary:
This study examines, the synoptic meteorological phenomena that led to “adverse
weather conditions" resulting in the interruption of ferry services
"Rio-Antirio" for three specific cases in the year 2006. As has been observed
in recent decades off the western coast of mainland Greece and the Peloponnese,
there have been recorded, on occasion, cases exhibiting very strong southerly
winds, which has necessitated the temporary banning of maritime transport on
the Ionian Sea. During the period 2005 to 2010 there were fifty-seven incidents
of such bans on shipping transport services, due to adverse weather conditions
in the strait "Rio-Antirio." From the study of three cases observed: a) a
strong trough was observed, which covered a large portion or the entire
European continent, b) rising altitude vorticity and the c) formation of strong
pressure gradient prior to each event in each of the cases studied. The
conclusions of this study relate initially, to the timely warning of any strong
winds would lead to an interruption of ferry services along " RIO- ANTIRRIO"
and, secondly, to weather conditions that will prevail in the vicinity of the
Port of Patras, from which commercial and passenger ferries depart for Italy
and for the Ionian Sea islands.
