Summary:
Τhe Framework Directive for Water (the WFD), which was voted in the European
Commission in 2000 after long-term consultations , established a framework for
common action in the field of water policy. In Cyprus, 216 river water bodies
and 18 lake water bodies were identified. In this paper 8 dams and 15 rivers
were examined in the category of surface water. The underground water resources
are re-evaluated on the basis of the already designated groundwater
bodies, according to the submission of Article 5 of Directive 2000/60/EC. The
monitoring network for ground water bodies was divided into 19 networks. Each
network includes many stations. In this paper 20 stations were studied. The
General State Laboratory , following the methods EPA (Environmental Protection
Agency) developed a system of quality control of groundwater and surface waters
of Cyprus. The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory 1 of the State Laboratory
during the years 2009-2010, measured samples of groundwater and surface waters
of Cyprus which were given to us by the Water Development Department in order
to look for trace elements and heavy metals (Boron, Barium, Manganese, Zinc,
Iron, Magnesium) using the method ICP / AES (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy in
Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma). Surface water samples were taken from dams
and rivers. The ground water samples were taken from boreholes. The sampling
has taken place in 4 districts (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos). The
technique ICP / AES requires preparation of samples before and after sampling,
preparation of standard solutions for creating the calibration curve, solutions
QC (Quality Control system) in order to check the correct operation of the
spectrophotometer , and blank samples used to estimate any contamination of the
sample by the laboratory area. The results of measurements have been processed
and we have an overview of the concentrations of heavy metals and trace
elements in groundwater and surface waters of Cyprus.
