Experimental and theoretical evaluation of the Environmental Redesign of Urban space in Athens using photovoltaic and reflective surfaces
Summary:
The present paper deals with the application of reflective and photovoltaic
pavements and reflective asphalt in a large urban zone of the greater Athens
area in order to fight urban heat island and improve the local comfort and
environmental conditions. Extensive monitoring of the whole area has been
performed approximately 6 months after the installation of the new materials.
The experimental procedure started in February 2015 and ended at July of 2015.
Existing measurements until June 2015, show a decrease of up to 7.6 K between
the surface temperature of the reflective and the conventional asphalt.
Relative measurements on reflective and conventional pavements show a decrease
of up to 9.9 K respectively. It is estimated that the use of cool materials
contributes to the reduction of the peak ambient temperature during a typical
summer day, by 1 to 2 K.
The paper presents the whole rehabilitation project, the type of the materials
used, the monitoring results as well as simulation data aiming to compare the
initial against the final thermal conditions.
