Quantitative analysis of coastal erosion in a G.I.S. environment on the island of Samos
Summary:
In this master thesis we studied the factors affecting coastal erosion on the
island of Samos.
Initially bibliographical references were retrieved, on basic theoretical
elements that define the coastal environment, the coastal erosion and
Geographical Information Systems (G.I.S.). Also bibliographical references were
recovered, concerning the study area, as well as, the digital data that were
essential for creating thematic maps in G.I.S. software. Then field work was
performed, on the coastal areas of the island of Samos.
A comparative observation of the coastlines of the island, using satellite
images provided by the software, Google Earth, was implemented.
With the help of the aforementioned elements, the erosion map of coastal
lithology and the final risk map of coastal erosion of Samos, were created.
To sum up, in the North part of Samos coastal erosion is visible, due to higher
wave energy that occurs in the area, while in the Southern part of the island,
coastal erosion is limited in specific areas, and is caused mainly by
anthropogenic interventions. The Eastern and Western part of the island show
very low coastal erosion due to the low vulnerability of the lithological
formations that appear in these areas and also of the low wave energy.
