Simulations of jet-environment interactions
Summary:
We simulate the evolution of a system consisting of a relativistic, magnetized
outflow (jet) and different choices of hydrodynamic environments. In each case,
a thermal pressure gradient is present in the environment, which may lead to a
change in the shape of the jet. This is believed to be the case for the jet of
the active galaxy M87, as observations show a transition from parabolic to
conical streamlines near the Bondi radius (Asada & Nakamura 2012). We also
examine various features of the jet, such as the acceleration efficiency and
compare them with previous theoretical and numerical studies. We observe that
rarefaction acceleration is possibly present even in the case of active
galactic nuclei. The simulations are carried out using the PLUTO code, v.4.0.
