MicroMegas detectors position resolution and efficiency comparison for different gas mixtures
Summary:
After its second run, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will pause its
operations for an upgrade, in order to provide higher collision rate. The ATLAS
experiment will be upgraded too, in order to be able to cope with this higher
rate. One of the parts that will be removed is the Small Wheel (SW), which will
be replaced by the New Small Wheel (NSW). The latter will be composed by small
strip Thin Gap Chambers and MicroMegas detectors. The MicroMegas are gas
detectors of excellent position resolution, efficiency, and low cost, whose
main task will be muon detection, but they will also contribute to the
triggering. In this project data taken in SPS/H4 at CERN were used. Two
different gas mixtures were used, Ar&7%CO2 and Ar&10%CO2. The main aim of the
project was to compare MicroMegas’ position resolution and efficiency for these
two gas mixtures
