Summary:
In the present study, the synthesis of triethyl-4-pentylithium (TESPLi)
initiator was accomplished. TESPLi is an initiator for anionic polymerization,
which was used for the first time in our laboratory in 2009, for the synthesis
of telehelic polymers baring a protected acetylenic group. Linear homo and
co-polymers of isoprene and styrene where synthesized. The molecular weights
ranged from 30K to 150K and molecular weight distributions from I=1.04 to I=
1,4. Moreover, living polymers where terminated with 1,4-dibutylbromine or
[(chloromethyl)phenyl]dimethylchlorosilane and where then used to synthesize α,
ω-heterotelechelic linear polymers. The α,ω-heterotelechelic linear polymers
led to cyclic and graft copolymers using click chemistry and Atom Transfer
Radical Polymerizatio (ATRP). Furthermore, three miktoarm star copolymers A2B
(A=polybutadiene and B=telechelic polystyrene) and A3 (A=polyisoprene) where
synthesized, when living polymers reacted with trichloromethylsilane and 1,3,5-
tricarbonyltrichloride respectevly. During the above mentioned processes,
problems occurred mainly because of the initiator’s instability, the absence
of molecular weight control, and the synthesis of polymers with broad molecular
weight distributions.
