Tractatus's Ontological Remarks: An Explanation
Summary:
The present study is about Ludwig Wittgenstein’s early work, the Tractatus
Logico-Philosophicus and can be considered the first part of a future four-part
project explaining the TLP. The present part, the first one, concerns
ontological remarks, the second would concern logical remarks, the third,
remarks on solipsism and mysticism; then in the fourth and last part, a
thorough evaluation of the TLP would reveal its ethical character. Chapter 1 of
this study explains the concept of logical space. Chapter 2 examines the nature
of Sachverhalt and the traditional philosophical problem of whether existence
is a property of things. Chapter 3 concerns the notion of Tatsache. Chapter 4
portrays the philosophical tradition that Wittgenstein inherits in Cambridge,
while Chapter 5 discusses the development of the picture theory of language.
Chapter 6 analyses the nature of complex objects (Komplexe) and their
distinction from facts (Tatsachen). Chapter 7 suggests a negative account of
Tractarian objects, viz, what cannot be said about them. Finally, Chapter 8,
attempts to explain the argument for the substance of the world and concludes
with proposing a positive account of the Tractarian objects, viz, what can be
said about them.
