Summary:
The geographical, the administrative, the demographic and the economic data of
Kea Island Isle are mentioned and the technical infrastructure related to the
environment is described in the first chapters.
The geological and hydrogeological regime of Kea Island is presented in this
study, focusing on the fracture pattern analysis of the crystalline-schist mass
outcrops the island. The combined use of field mapping and geological data
digital analysis extracting lineament density maps and fracture intersection
density maps reveals a high relationship between the fracture pattern and the
groundwater
occurrence.
It was presented the morphological analysis of hydrogeological basins according
the Strahler 1952 and Mayer 1990. This analysis helped for the interpretation
of the structural domes in the gneiss-schist mass.
The structural geology status in Kea island is investigated in situ on
August 2011, the gneiss-schist orientations were estimated by rododiagrams,
moreover the drainage network branches’ orientations were estimated to
interpret the tectonic activity in the study area, moreover three geological
cross-sections have been performed in order to interpret the geological status
of the study area.
On August 2011, groundwater sampling took place in four springs across the
central part of the study area. It is presented the hydrochemical analysis
results that the EYDAP laboratory made.
In order to obtain a complete description of the fracture network, the study
area is mapped at various scales with the aid of GIS and remote sensing
techniques were integrated along with the data gathered from field work.
Remarkable correlations between the hydrochemical data of the main springs
(located along the SE and NW part of the island), and the results of lineament
analysis and the hydrolithological regime of Kea Island, contribute to extract
an integrated conception for the relation of the groundwater potential with the
structure of fissured
rocks.
The water balance of Kea Island is estimated using Richards equation and the
CLASS U3M-1D model. The cumulative leakage (mm) is estimated by this method.
