Spectral optical properties of the atmosphere of Athens
Summary:
This work process solar radiation data obtained by ground based measurements
using spectroradiometer in Athens area in order to investigate the effect of
gaseous pollutants and aerosols in the solar spectrum of the atmosphere of
Athens under conditions of cloudless sky. For the above purpose, the temporal
and spatial variations of the aerosols optical properties calculated
experimentally and theoretically.
Such properties are the aerosol optical depth (AOD), the Angstrom parameters α
and β, the Single Scattering Albedo (SSA), the diffuse to direct radiation
ratio, the aerosol size distribution and the ability of the equation of
Angstrom to calculate accurately the values of the aerosol optical depth.
The variability of α, β and AOD is a result of the sea breeze action which
plays a dominant role in the formation of the atmosphere in the Athens basin,
while different values taken by α reveal different sizes of aerosols.
Thereafter, black carbon particles and secondary aerosols which detected in the
atmosphere of Athens influence with their effects (absorption and reflectivity
respectively) the SSA and therefore the diffuse to direct radiation ratio.
