Study on the effect of the metabolic syndrome in the fetus, in women with pre-existing metabolic syndrome before pregnancy, based on the syndrome parameters
Summary:
Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is defined as visceral obesity, diabetes melitus, hypertension and lipid disorders (triglycerides and cholesterol). It is considered as a simple way to detect people at risk of cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes. While a proportion of women with metabolic syndrome become pregnant, pregnancy itself creates a milieu that is similar to the syndrome.
Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the association between the parameters of pre – existing metabolic syndrome and the complications presented during pregnancy, for the mother and the fetus.
Materials – Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study (2010 – 2016), conducted on 80 pregnant women, aged from 19 to 38 years old, 40 with pre – existing metabolic syndrome and 40 healthy pregnant women. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software.
Results: Women with pre – existing metabolic syndrome are at increased risk of developing complications during pregnancy. The results showed significant correlations between the parameters of metabolic syndrome and its effects in the infant (birth weight).
Conclusions: Pre – existing metabolic syndrome is associated with a number of pregnancy complications for both the mother (preterm delivery, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, hypertension during pregnancy) and the neonate (intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight).
