A comparative physiological study of species within the bacterial genus Geobacillus
Summary:
About two decades ago, the scientific community began to use more intensively strains of the genus of Geobacillus, since these bacteria are capable to produce by various enzymes until biofuels. In this thesis, we studied two strains of Geobacillus, Geobacillus sp24 & Geobacillus sp50 («kaustophilus» clade), so that is a comparative study on these bacterial strains, which being collected from the area of Nea Kameni in Santorini. The aim is the better understanding of the physiology of these two bacteria, namely strain Geobacillus sp50, beyond the production of xylanases, it has a cellulose-utilizing capability, making this bacterial strain almost unique (cellulase production). The sequencing of the genome of Geobacillus sp50, coupled with various experiments conducted during the post-graduate stydy, showing that this bacterium has great biotechnological importance for energy production (biofuels) from various renewable sources.
