Summary:
HIV infection and AIDS constitutes a major health issue, globally. The virus is responsible le for the loss of 34,000,000 lives until today and almost have of infected population is not aware of their status.
The term HIV Testing Services includes a broad spectrum of services that should be provided along with HIV diagnostic testing as long as counselling, linkage with proper prevention services, treatment, care and clinical support services. Furthermore, collaboration with laboratory institutions should be ensured in order to maintain proper quality and validity of results. The World Health Organization has stated the Principles which are essential in order to preserve a satisfactory level of service providing.
The aim of this monocentric cross-sectional study is, firstly, to identify the sexual behavior pattern of those attending the Centre of Anonymous HIV diagnostic testing in a Greek Public Hospital, along with the identification of their characteristics and their attitude towards HIV testing.
The results of this study, which are in accordance with several studies from international literature, demonstrate poor knowledge regarding the virus, systematically dangerous behavior for HIV transmission, lack of universal access to HIV Testing Services and the presence of social stigma towards the disease. The need of focused efforts and the supply of suitable education, informing and service providing is considered of outmost importance.
