Self-perception for academic and social competence and anxiety for high school students: mediating factors
Summary:
ABSTRACT
Background: Recent research has highlighted the correlation between social competence and mental- physical health, as well as various disorders including anxiety disorders. Many studies have shown that the children’s anxiety have more negative expectations, negative self-concept, lower social competence and higher social anxiety than non-anxious peers. Strong evidence also emerged from various studies which have shown the predictive value of negative emotions for a variety of future problems, anxiety disorders, low self-perception skills and low self-esteem. The evidence linking internalizing problems with academic achievement suggests that perceived academic failures are related to change in internalizing symptoms and, conversely, that achievement gains predict changes in depressive symptoms. Τhe present study examined the correlation between adolescents-reported social & academic competence and anxiety, explored which factors protect adolescents against anxiety disorders, and their influence over youth-perceived academic and social skills.
Methodology: The sample consisted of adolescents (N=329, 43,5% boys, SD=13,4 years) from three public high schools of Athens, who completed Harter’s Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) and Achenbach’s Youth Self Report (YSR), in order to assess self-perception of youth-reported academic and social competence and their anxiety. The analysis of linear regression was used to investigate the hypothesized correlations. On the control of the protective factors and their impact on these associations Baron & Kenney’s approach through hierarchical regression and the criterion of Sobel were used respectively.
Results: The results indicated that adolescents’ self-perception for both academic & social competence is correlated to their anxiety. In the academic domain, self-esteem, physical appearance, relationship with peers and parents as well as conduct-behavior mediate the aforementioned association, while self-esteem, physical appearance & relationship with parents appeared to have protective role with respect to the social domain. The findings revealed several potential targets for prevention and treatment interventions and some of them are highlighted.
