Statistical Copolymers of N-Vinyl Pyrrolidone: Synthesis via RAFT, Monomer Reactivity Ratios and Thermal Properties.
Summary:
In this thesis, we study the synthesis of the statistical copolymers p(NVP-co-DMAEMA) and p(NVP-co-BzMA) via RAFT, by using [(O-Ethylxanthyl)methyl]benzene and [1-(O-Ethylxanthyl)ethyl]benzene as CTAs. All polymerizations were conducted using high-vacuum and glassblowing techniques.
The molecular weight of the copolymers and the molecular weight distribution were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), while the composition of the copolymers was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).
The reactivity ratios were estimated using the Finemann-Ross, inverted Finemann- Ross, and Kelen-Tüdos graphical methods, along with the computer program COPOINT. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained by calculating the dyad monomer sequence fractions and the mean sequence length.
The glass-transition temperature (Tg) values of the copolymers were measured by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC).
The kinetics of thermal degradation behavior of the copolymers was also studied by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and compared with the respective homopolymers.
All the copolymers synthesized in this thesis are biocompatible and biodegradable and they could be used in biorelated applications.
