The gendered representation of women politicians in the Greek media prior to elections: the case of Zoe Konstantopoulou
Summary:
This paper attempts to reflect the way in which gender stereotypes determine how female politicians are represented in the Greek media in times of political unrest, such as those prior to elections. The research methods used are discourse analysis and thematic analysis, while the terms under which it is conducted is that of Cultural Studies. The sample is consisted of three interviews of Zoe Konstantopoulou.

The paper is divided into six chapters. In the first chapter the author gives a brief introduction to contemporary political reality in relation to women politicians. The second chapter gives the theoretical framework of the research and is divided into five sub-sections. The first summarizes the feminist struggles that allowed women to "exit" the limited space of the private sphere and enter the public sphere. The author describes the landmarks of women's movements in the West and in Greece, in relation to their political and social achievements.

The second section of the theoretical framework refers to the underrepresentation of women in international parliaments, as well as the Greek and it describes the difficulties faced by women in their attempts to enter the political arena. The third section of the same chapter describes the gender stereotypes attributed to women and men and how they define their political profile. The fourth section deals with the gendered representation of women politicians in the media. It describes the framing modes in accordance with the gendered stereotypes. Finally, the fifth section of the theoretical framework gives a brief description of the personality of Zoe Konstantopoulou, the case-subject of this thesis.
The third chapter provides the main research question and sub-questions, it briefly describes the sample and the frame and analyzes the two research methods used, the thematic and discourse analysis. The fourth chapter deals with the empirical part of the thesis through the thematic analysis of the three interviews. It also summarizes the findings after conducting this research method. The fifth chapter is the empirical part of the thesis through the discourse analysis of the three interviews and it also includes a section which summarizes the main findings. Finally, the sixth chapter presents the overall conclusions drawn from the research and presents the topics proposed for discussion.
