Summary:
Recently, there has been observed a steady increase in the use of digital domes (fulldome environments) around the world, allowing for presentation of high quality audiovisual content in real time, which is used for research, educational, scientific and entertainment purposes. From ancient until modern times, the architectural structure of dome is considered as one of the most popular immersion environments, the possibilities of which are highlighted and reinforced by the contemporary virtual reality technologies in such manner that allows for full immersion of the audience in the virtual environment and consequently, their interaction. The artistic community has now begun to understand the exceptional capabilities and features of digital dome and exploit them during the presentation of interactive and non-interactive works of art in this environment. Although only 1% of digital domes is globally used for hosting artistic works today, it is expected that in the near future the digital dome will emerge as a popular communication medium between artists and their audience.
This study explores in detail the history of the dome as a host of applied and fine arts and its evolution into modern digital immersive environment that supports bidirectional communication between artists and audience. As research concerning digital domes remains limited due to the short existence to date of this environment, it is critical to further investigate its attributes, to compare them with other widely used immersive environments and to study its communicative dimension. The main aim of this study is explore and understand the approach taken by the creators (artists and designers), using advanced nonlinear storytelling technologies and interactive design in order to create immersive experiences in the digital dome environment as well as to draw conclusions concerning the experience of the audience in the environment and its interaction with the presented work of art. More precisely, the works of art presented in digital dome environment by Greek and foreign artists within the project European Mobile Dome Lab for International Media Artists (E/M/D/L), which adopted the environment as a platform for creative innovation in the fields of digital and interactive arts, are the subject of research conducted in this study, including content analysis and empirical study methodologies.
