Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which strikes our country and other countries all over the world. A powerful earthquake during working time can cause many problems to the employer, his employees and the visitors of α company. Proper identification and evaluation of all possible dangers, and among others, the danger of an earthquake, is very important for companies, in order for them to secure their workplace. Earthquake is a natural phenomenon which can have unmeasurable disastrous consequences to materials, buildings and to human resources. Modern technology is not able yet to accurately forecast when and where an earthquake will take place, therefore national protection from its consequences is of high importance and constitutes national matter and responsibility. The earthquake-resistant design in all different workplaces (enterprises, industries, public or private sector’s services) constitutes of every possible action of the employer and employees in order to evaluate the vulnerability of buildings, to reduce the consequences and to secure human lives and the property of the company.
Research states that after an earthquake, 50% of the damages in buildings, is damages in nonstructural elements of a building. Despite the fact that after 1970, seismic durability of buildings has been carefully examined, many buildings, and especially hospitals, have a lot of damages in their nonstructural elements.
In this FSP we will analyze the vulnerability of nonstructural elements of a health care building, the hospital Eugenidio Hospital “Agia Trias” Α.Ε. Nonstructural vulnerability is referred to all elements of a building that are not architectural (core building). We will examine if the nonstructural elements of the hospital are dangerous for the human lives or/and are able to cause financial loss of the enterprise after an earthquake. After this examination we will search possible actions in order to avoid or reduce these two problems.
