The current study will attempt to examine the rise and the electoral breakthrough of the Greek far-right extremist political party, “Golden Dawn”. The electoral breakthrough of Golden Dawn has raised lot of academic interest at the social and political sciences. In literature, there is a wide range of explanatory frameworks that attempt to explain the phenomenon. Initially, the current study reviews and criticizes the available literature. Then, utilizing the concept of "moral panic," this study suggests that the moral panic which was cultivated via the mass media regarding issues of first priority in Golden Dawn's political agenda (i.e. immigration, crime) as well as Golden Dawn itself, was what gave the opportunity for this extremist political party to influence a part of the electorate.
