Summary:
Purpose of this study will be marine protected areas in the Mediterranean. Initially is attempted an effort to summarize the necessity of marine protected areas and their importance globally. After, the explanation of the reasons that led to the need for regional protection and hence the need for protection of the Mediterranean sea. Then, the benefits of marine protected areas for the Mediterranean are introduced. More important, however, remains the report of the existing problems and what are the reasons that lead to different treatment of the countries of Western and Eastern Mediterranean. Particular emphasis is given in the relations of the neighboring countries of Greece and Turkey and how these affect the status of marine protected areas on their coasts. Finally, concrete proposals are exposed on how to effectively tackle the existing problems with the help of both Mediterranean countries and the European Union itself. The study closes with the main conclusions that came out of it.
