Summary:
According to the title of my thesis, my research focuses on the study of the psaltic tradition in Cyprus until 1571, when the island was conquested by the Ottomans. Nevertheless, this date is not just a conventional time frame. The conquest by the Ottomans was a focal point in the history of the island, which reversed the social conventions dramatically. The particularity of the psaltic art in Cyprus is documented in musical manuscript inscriptions, such as “as it is chanted by Cypriots” or “as it is chanted by the youths”. In the same context, compositions by earlier Cypriot composers, whose oeuvres are found dispersed in the manuscripts, are studied. The goal of this thesis is to register the works of the Cypriot composers, to locate their biographical data in the manuscript tradition as well as in the relevant literature, the discovery of various hymnographic, musical and liturgical particularities of this tradition. Moreover, the interaction of the Cypriot psaltic art with the also under Venetian domination Cretan psaltic art is examined. Finally, my research focuses on the life and the oeuvre of the well known Cypriot musician and theorist Hieronymus Tragoudistes.
