The relation of characteristics and coaching efficancy in team sports.
Summary:
INTRODUCTION. The self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977) is directly related to the improvement of the athletic performance and the existing bibliography verifies this relation in concern to the athletes or trainers. Based on the above theory and other studies related to the teaching efficacy Feltz et al. (1999) introduced the conceptual model of coaching efficacy. The purpose of the research is to evaluate the relationship among the psychological characteristics, the leading behavior and other trainers’ characteristics of the environment and the team, with the self- efficacy of the team sports trainers.
METHOD. The sample consisted of 340 team sports trainers (football, basketball, volleyball, handball and waterpolo). The male trainers were 293 with an average age of 39.6±6.9 years and the female trainers were 47 with an average age of 34.1±7.2 years, who are employed in five different playing categories: 1) Α1 National Category, 2) Α2 National Category, 3) Β & Γ National Category, 4) Local Category, 5) Developmental ages. The sample comes from urban and rurban areas. The following questionnaires were used for the research: (a) Leadership Sport Scale (LSS; Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980; Aggelonidis, 1995), (b) Coaching efficacy Scale, (Feltz, Chase, Moritz, & Sullivan, 1999; Tsormpatsoudis, Zaxariadis, Daroglou, & Grouios, 2000), (c) SCAT; (Martens, 1977; Zeras & Kakkos, 1990), (d) (Valey, 1986). In addition, the team trainers responded to a questionnaire that regarded their personal perceptions for the environment and the team.
RESULTS. The model of the canonical correlation demonstrated two ordinary correlations that clarify the 64,7 % of the total volatility of the dependent variables. In the first canonical correlation, the factor of sport confidence-trait presents increased importance and the factor of training and instructions follows. This first correlation strongly affiliates with the factor of game strategy, the factor of motivation development follows and the factor of technique development comes at the end. The second canonical correlation clarifies the 16,6% of the total volatility of the dependent variables. In this second correlation, two factors of the leader behavior in sports, the social support and positive feedback, present increased importance, which lead to the relation of the variable with the factor of the character building. Finally, the dependent variables Competitive Trait Anxiety and democratic and autocratic behavior are not of great importance in none of the two canonical correlations.
CONCLUSIONS. The coaching efficacy is related with more survey variables. The sport confidence-trait is more vital in the self-efficacy of all the psychological characteristics of the trainers. The trainers’ characteristics appear to relate in a big or smaller degree, except the factor of the level of the athletic experience that does not relate. The sense of support for the athletes at first, and the family influence self- efficacy. The prospect and the development of the team appear to be the major factor of the self- efficacy than the achievement of the team performance.
