The chamber music with piano by Robert Schumann and the evolution of sonata form
Summary:
This paper opens with a chronological presentation of Robert Schumann’s chamber works with piano, which are further distinguished in cyclic works (mostly consisted in four movements) and collections of character pieces. The particular way in which sonata form is handled by the German romantic composer is then attempted to be examined through the first movements of three representative works of this genre: the Piano Quintet, in E flat, opus 44 (1842), the Piano Trio No. 1, in d minor, opus 63 (1847), and the Violin Sonata No. 2, in d minor, opus 121 (1851). The detailed analyses of form in these three movements ultimately lead to comparative conclusions, which reveal the composer’s constant but also changing options regarding the realisation of sonata form during his mature creative period.
