Abstract
The process of entrance to higher education and the thoughts (and sometimes acts) of restructuring or abolishing it has been dividing the Greek public opinion for decades now. In the meanwhile, a lot of studies have been concerned with the emotional effects this has on the parts involved, focusing on the student’s point of view.
The objective of this thesis is to explore the experience and meaning of the entering examination process for its participants, while outlining their representations of others due to their entrance to higher education and their educational background in general. Particularly, it aims to create a coherent framework starting from the recount of the personal experience and leading to the approximation of the social representations in order to investigate the way the current educational institution and its participants are perceived by the participants of the study.
The data were collected and analyzed according to the qualitative method of life history since we aimed in describing, interpreting and understanding the participant’s feelings and views. This was achieved by interviewing 12 currently senior high-school students using their involvement in the entrance exams as primal inclusion criteria.
The research findings outlined the existence of an environment in which the educational success and the access to higher education have been set as the ultimate goal and a major necessity on a student’s agenda due to the emphasis attributed to the educational institution, its correlation to the future potential employment opportunities and the interpretations of the educational achievement and failure in general. Inside this conceptual framework, which surrounds the students, several effects on an emotional and a practical level can be identified.
This study hopes to enlighten students’ experience of educational evaluation and to raise awareness of the parts involved (parents, teachers, society) regarding the danger of education –especially under the pressure of the modern employment status- losing its original purpose (if it has not already lost it).
