Study and classification of atmospheric circulation on synoptic scale over the region of Thessaloniki
Summary:
In the present study, the atmospheric circulation of a synoptic scale on a daily basis over the Thessaloniki region during the period 2005-2009, on the isobaric surface of 850 hPa, was studied and classified. For the study of atmospheric circulation, the daily maps of the NOAA Earth system research laboratory were used and the classification was made following the classification of Kassomenos et al (1998). Therefore, the synoptic conditions were distinguished in eight categories depending on the type of contours, the position of the trough or ridge axis and the distribution of the wind. The conclusions finally made from this classification were that over the study area for all years the synoptic types of cyclonic and ancyclonic flows appeared at similar rates almost all months of the years. However, a higher rate of exposure was seen in the open anticyclone (OA) and in the summer months the H-L category (a combination of a high pressure system and a low pressure system) prevailed.
