The impact of anti-ageing treatment in sarcopenia and the frailty syndrome.
Summary:
Sarcopenia defined as a syndrome rather than as a pathology is the loss of muscle mass and function associated with age. Sarcopenia is a mystery for medicine and despite numerous publications available in literature and the number of papers currently published there is no agreement on its definition and even less about its causes. A prominent element demonstrating the lack of consensus is the fact that the various working groups are still talking about the right name for this syndrome, which is associated with loss of muscle mass and strength in the elderly, usually accompanied by physical inactivity, decreased mobility, slow gait and poor physical condition which is also common characteristics of frailty syndrome. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying sarcopenia are unknown it is tempting to assume that the interaction between biological and environmental factors work together in a positive feedback cycle that contributes to the progress of aging and sarcopenia. Unfortunately there are no broadly accepted anti-aging therapeutic strategies that can stop or reverse the progression of sarcopenia. The aim of this review is to summarize the available information in the literature regarding the oldest and newest anti-aging treatments that have been proposed to address the aging and sarcopenia and to draw useful conclusions.
