Analysis of the perspective of Greek press towards the public vote of 5th of July
Summary:
The objective of the present analysis is 24 articles of the Greek press regarding the public vote of the 5th of July 2015, and the acceptance or rejection of the proposals of the institutional parts about the new agreement of the European partners with the Greek government for the management of the big Greek dept. According to Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) of Michael Halliday and the transitivity model, different kinds of processes and participants were found that are formed via specific lexicogrammatical options, in order to reveal the perspective of each newspaper regarding the public vote and the government of SYRIZA. The selection of different linguistic elements in each journalistic article that is analyzed, creates a different social reality and promotes a different perspective and different political ideology with intention to manipulate the readers, construct public opinion and ultimately the results of the public vote. Therefore, SFG provides the linguistic means in which different grammatical and syntactical choices of the journalistic texts are composed with, that produce specific points of view at the presentation of a fact, contributing to the reproduction of certain political ideologies, while the «word» of the Μass Media is proved to influence the public conscience and action in a certain social situation.
