Folk events, local identity and cultural reformation. The case of the “Coccones and Gegides” custom from Emporio, Ptolemaida
Summary:
At the most crucial moments of his life man always desired the reassurance of good omens in order to ingratiate himself with luck and limit the imponderable factors that might arise. Such a transitional period is the “Dodekaimero” (12 days) and especially the New Year’s Day, a period characterized by pure joy and an evident mix of pagan and Christian customs. Wanting to protect themselves from the naughty creatures of this period, people turned to magic retrenchments using ploughs, ropes and small groups of people who go from house to house in a customary way at specific times in a year. Such a ceremonial practice is also the double tradition of Emporio in Ptolemaida named “Cocones and Gegides” that is celebrated on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day by the whole community.
This work aims at recording and describing the custom of “Cocones and Gegides”, at studying its transformations through time, understanding the motives of the participants and of the non-participants, discussing how this practice is projected and advertised, recording the local music and dance repertoire and finally establishing how through the folk events, traditions and music and dance repertoire the local identity can be formed and reformed.
