The narrative structure through the comparison of healthy speakers and speakers with language disorders narratives
Summary:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the narrative structure of healthy speakers and speakers with language disorders in oral texts. By using the context and the text’s discourse markers as basic tools, an effort is being made so as to define the existing narrative parts in each narrative, and then a comparison of the overall narrative structure is made, concerning the completeness of the narrative parts, their extent, but also the different form they have per speaker. Secondarily, conclusions are also drawn for the narrative structure in general. The data analysis leads to the following conclusions: a) the narrative structure of speakers with language disorders entails some particular characteristics but does not significantly deviate from the rule; b) there is no way to strictly apply a universal rule of narrative structure; and c) the narrative structure completeness depends less on the linguistic abilities of the speaker and more on his cognitive schemas.
