Childhood, Poverty and Impact on Children: Socio-Historical and Contemporary Dimensions

This study examines childhood poverty and the impact of poverty on children. The general conclusion resulting from the study of bibliography and other archival sources as well as from the examination and processing of data, is that poverty has a decisive effect on shaping a life framework for children that can be characterized by insecurity, rejection, can significantly affect their health status and well-being and puts them in the way of their future prospects and hopes. Poverty and social exclusion in childhood prevent people from personal development, depriving them of the potential of individual intervention in shaping their present and future perspectives. Deprivation of opportunities arises as a failure to access a set of opportunities, activities, goods

and services common to the majority of peers. Poor children in Greece due to the economic crisis are experiencing lower living standards and worse living conditions.
