Summary:
Mass culture texts form a place in which dominant ideologies are reproducted and subjects are constituted in a certain way, this means a privileged place for the examination of migrants’ representations. This work puts the focus of the analysis in television narration, in particular two series "Love came from away" and "Do not tell me goodbye", which screened at Greek television during the years 2002-2003 and 2004-2005 respectively by the private channel of ANT1 and dealt largely with immigration in Greece. The main research questions focus on how the identity of migrants is constructed as "other" and the specific representations that emerge during processing of the TV speech. Considered that if the construction of immigrants is one and indissoluble or if accompanied by diverse significations. With research framework the discourse analysis and methodological tools derived from the critical and Foucauldian approach, I attempt a thorough analysis, structured in four axes. Interactive parts therefore are approached by two starting points, allowing to highlight the linguistic characteristics of the text, the conditions of the production of the television narrative and the ideological meanings of linguistic articulation. The analysis results suggest a "traditional" point of view of immigration, considering migration as an obstacle to the normal development of social and economic life of the country, and presenting immigrants as inferior and unreliable "others". Migration is also related with illegality and criminality, strengthening the "traditional" reason. Finally, I used as an additional but equally important methodological tool individual interviews with immigrants living and working in Greece, in order to "hear" their own voice and point of view on this issue.
