World cultures and Benaki Museum: The Chinese ceramics collection of George Eumorphopoulos and its management
Summary:
Benaki Museum relates the Greek Culture with exhibits that cover the whole spectrum of the Greek Art (from the Prehistoric era to modern times) juxtaposing it, though, with cultures from all around the world, through European, Pre-Columbian, African, Chinese, Asian and Islamic works of art.
The exhibition "Ceramics from China" is an integrated part of the Benaki Museum’s policy on acquainting the Greek visitors with non-western cultures through the collections of World Cultures Department, to foster dialogue and the perception of cultural diversity at the national and international level.
The present thesis’ aim is to observe, record and evaluate, on the one hand, the ways in which the Benaki Museum manages and presents the collections of the World Cultures, having as a case study the collection "Chinese Ceramics" and its presentation to the Greek public in the exhibition "Ceramics from China", on the other hand, the impact such an exhibition can have, mainly on the general Greek public.
The methodological approach for the examination and study of the Benaki Museum’s management of the Chinese Ceramics collection was based on literature research, interviews with the curator of the temporary exhibition "Ceramics from China", as well as other employees of the museum, and the collection of data from the observation of the museum’s website, and the exhibition’s impact on the press and the web.
The second step was to perform a survey on the premises of the museum, which also comprised the research frame in which the present dissertation was conducted. In particular, a public survey was performed in Greek and foreign visitors to the Museum using questionnaires with open and closed-ended questions regarding the opinions of the public both on this exhibition and on their familiarity with the Chinese element and culture.
