How the concepts of normality and pathology compose the epistimological history of life's sience in the work of George Canguilhem
Summary:
Until the 17th century the fields of life sciences are medicine and natural history, with no significant connections between them. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, natural history is distinguished in zoology and botany, while achievements in the medical field create fields such as anatomy, physiology, surgery and clinical medicine. [Mayr, E. 2008: 157] Until the 18th century, it was natural history which classified living beings focusing on their description. It was Lamarck who closed the era of natural history opening, opening up the era of biology.
The aim of this work is to investigate the epistemological composition of the life sciences based on G.K’ s understanding of Normality and Pathology.
The work begins with the historical reflection of the perceptions of life on the basis of which the life sciences were developed. The use of the concepts of Normal and Pathological by scientists in France resulted in the inclusion of Pathology in Physiology in the 19th century, but also the scientific revolution in physics and chemistry led to the biology of natural sciences. Due to the fact that G.K who dealt with this subject raised important questions and issues on that, it turns out that biology and medicine are autonomous sciences that belong to the life sciences.
