Obesity, stress and oral health
Summary:
Obesity and dental caries are two major public health problems with high prevalence. Although lot of studies had explored the relationship between obesity and dental caries the results remain conflicting and inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to investigate parameters related to the oral health status of overweight and obese children and to compare them with those of normal weight children. Furthermore, to investigate biomarkers of stress as possible mediators between oral health and overweight/obesity in children.
Children in the case group had significantly higher DMFT, dmft, PI and GI indices, lower stimulated saliva flow rate and decreased high saliva buffer capacity. Multiple regression analysis revealed that body weight significantly affected caries severity for permanent and primary teeth, gingival inflammation and plaque index. In this study's regression analysis models, stress variables didn’t have impact on caries or gingival inflammation. Overweight and obese children had higher salivary cortisol AUC. However the role of stress as a mediator factor could not be supported only by this finding.
In conclusion overweight and obese children showed increased levels of dental caries, periodontal inflammation and plaque accumulation and decreased saliva flow rate and buffer capacity. They also presented worse oral hygiene behavior compared to the normal weight children. No association was found between oral health parameters, overweight/ obesity and stress variables.
