Summary:
This postgraduate dissertation is a review of the literature on epilepsy and its effect on pregnancy. Epilepsy is a multi-faceted and complex disorder that affects many women of childbearing age. It is caused usually due to the excessive discharge of cerebral neurons and includes a group of different neurological disorders manifested by seizures. The knowledge of the classification of the different types of epilepsy is necessary, since it determines the appropriate treatment that will be chosen based on the previous research investigations. However, the use of antiepileptic drugs is often accompanied by side effects. These side effects are the main impediment to the desire of a woman of childbearing age to become pregnant. According to scientific research, the existence of epilepsy is not a contraindication to pregnancy. However, it is necessary the epileptic mothers to be monitored systematically by specialized doctors. An integrated follow-up of the pregnant woman from pregnancy planning and after childbirth will reduce the risk of complications for both the mother and the fetus. At the same time, choosing the right anti-epileptic medication (avoids balpate) and adjusting the dosage over the entire time together with appropriate examinations will reduce the risk of malformations in the fetus.
