Summary:
This thesis aims at the creation of the functional translation of the play “Die Erziehung zur Ehe” by Otto Erich Hartleben, while at the same time it exams the difficulties that came up during the translation process. Initially, some basic theories concerning literature translation are studied, especially under the cultural view of translation. The following are presented: the strategies of “domestication”, and “foreignization” by Venutti, the definition of the theatrical translation, the strategy of the ”accurate translation”, according to Christiane Nord, as well as the model of the twelve translation techniques by Peter Newmarc, on which the translation of the already mentioned play is based. Next, the author of the play Otto Erich Hartleben is presented through information regarding his life and his bibliography. Subsequently, the presentation of the play “Die Erziehung zur Ehe”, an educational play with comedy features and satirical mood from the side of the author, who aims at “nicely mocking” the bourgeois and its principles. Information about the time written, published and played, the ideals with which the play deals and the purpose of the creation of the play by the author follows. In the end, the translation of the play is presented along with comments that regard cultural, factual, vocabulary, structural, morphological and semantic obstacles that came up during the translation process.
