A comparative study for designation and management cases of Macedonian Tombs

In Macedonia, in the hellenistic years, in parallel to the other already known burial types, one more is presented which is the type of the Macedonian Tomb. These are rich burials that are mainly appeared in the region of Macedonia, from the 4th up to the 2nd century B.C. Their importance lies in understanding the ancient Greek civilization because they have been preserved under the ground in excellent conditions and provide unique evidence for the architecture, the painting, the sculpting but also for the burial customs in ancient Macedonia.
Therefore, it is commonly known that in each burial monument the difficulty in their management is because of the fact that they are constructions that were meant to remain closed and unseen to the public after their burial was carried out and put under the ground. So, how can such monuments whose purpose of existence is to be buried and the inability for the public to visit after their entombment, can, nowadays, not only be opened for the public but to also become spots of tourist projection and visit ? Therefore, the objective of this thesis is the study of certain cases of designation and management of the Macedonian tombs, focusing both on the weaknesses and the positive points of some different strategies that have been adopted so far in these examples, evaluating them either positively or negatively and always keeping in mind the “completed management” as well as the respect and the projection of the monumental values of these burial monuments.
