Summary:
Osteoporosis as a disease is one of the most common ailments in both postmenopausal women, predominantly, but also in both sexes in the elderly. High rates of morbidity as well as correspondingly increased rates of disability or mortality as a consequence of an osteoporotic fracture make it necessary one to investigate the condition and, on the other, to find appropriate preventive treatment.
Indeed, research into the cellular environment of bones, involving environmental factors, cellular mechanisms and endocrine and paracrine processes involved in the maintenance of bone mass has already changed the definition of osteoporosis from a disease characterized by reduced bone mineral density to a disease that predisposes to a fracture of low force.
In this background, and with the need to find targeted therapeutic responses tailored to the needs of the bone tissue, while blocking adverse effects, the study of bone metabolism has been the subject of research in recent years.
In this revolutionary approach to the disease, the role and role of sex steroid hormones plays a key role as pathogens against pathological bone catabolism.
