Natural disasters and UNESCO: The case of the city of Venice
Summary:
Natural disasters have undoubtedly become the main threat to the world heritage of humanity. The need to protect it becomes imperative as the occurrence of natural phenomena is more frequent with fierce intensity. Even today, the legend of the lost city of Atlantis symbolizes the loss of a culture from the omnipotent elements of nature. For decades, the phenomenon of climate change has been a fact, drastically changing the most vulnerable places of the world heritage. One of these places is the city of Venice and the lagoon surrounding it, a UNESCO World Heritage Property, which in its modern history faces many natural and man-made hazards that directly threaten its existence. The scientific community has emerged over Venice to find permanent solutions for the viability of the city and the preservation of properties that give it an "exceptional universal value". A friction point, with many people involved, is whether the city should be included in the UNESCO list of threatened World Heritage Property, which would affect its image or highlight the problems it faces.
