Globalization and the Middle East: Egypt as a case study
Summary:
The weak incorporation of the Middle Eastern economies in world economy is analysed according to the neogramscian theory that Robert Cox initiated in the study of international relations. Distortions of the process of the internationalization of the state implying obstacles in the internationalization of production resulted in the failure of Post-fordism and the globalised economy model to become hegemonic in the Middle East during the period mid-80's- mid 2000's.The pressures of adjustment to the neoliberal world order challenged the social powers of the countries of the Middle East both the elites and subordinate classes, while the forms of state tried to equilibrate the opposing powers. The structure of these three coxian levels of analysis, affected by material powers, ideas and institutions, in the case of Middle East is highly influenced by the ideology of political Islam and anti-americanism as an opposition to american hegemony promoted by globalization. The study of Egypt reveals the way the distortions of the internationalization of the egyptian state since the neoliberal reforms at the beginning of the 1990's, promoted by the Mubarak regime, did not lead the egyptian economy to be successfully incorporated in world economy. By contrast, neoliberal reforms leaded to the development of a counter-hegemonic movement that culminated in the Arab Spring.
